Amazon secured a deal with Warner on some franchises (Vampire Diaries, etc) that allows them to publish fanworks from said franchise (with massive restrictions, no porn, no graphic violence, etc), with low payment for authors (!!!) and massive percentage going back to Warner (!!!!!)

This is a DISGRACE. Fanfiction is FREE. People do not make MONEY out of it. This is not-for-profit derivative work.
The status quo between fanfiction and copyright is what allow us to enjoy it, if this starts happening, more people will question copyright and find way to challenge things for the worst, it could forever changed how fanfiction is.

Ok whoa there. I think we need to think about this.

Fanfiction has been sold for a while now. You know those Star Trek books? The Star Wars ones? The Doctor Who ones? The Supernatural ones? Hell, not even just in the Western world, but can we talk about doujin?

Fanfiction is NOT inherently free. It most typically is because the vast majority of it is publish online or in the past through zines, etc. But it’s been authorized and published before and continues to be.

The only difference here really is that they’re opening the door for more novice writers to get in on the action and to post fanfiction in a way similar to what is most common now, aka online. They HAVE permission from the company to do this, just like anyone who would publish a Star Trek book would.

So relax. Nobody is going to take away our rights to write fanfiction anytime soon.

^What Rose said. I think this could actually be a really good thing, because it could be a step toward legitimizing fanfiction and fan-created works, which currently tend to be mocked and demonized. And hey, authors are getting paid- we should be happy for them!

An addendum, since it’s Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s birthday: Sherlock Holmes was one of the earliest active fandoms. Fanfiction was printed and sold by the authors. The legend goes that Conan Doyle once purchased a fanfic himself, to help inspire him for a story.

Yes, it sounds like the OP is using anger at the idea of the IP holders getting some profit to obscure the fact that the OP simply doesn’t think ‘traditional’ fan fiction authors *should* make any money from it…or, at least, certainly doesn’t personally wan’t to pay. My interpretation could be completely wrong, of course, yet that is how it appears to me.

Monster High clothing patterns by DGRequiem on etsy - they look awesome and they’re very cheap ($2-3!) for how much work went into each one. If these sell well, they’ll be making more, too.

What camera/equipment do you use to take photos of your dolls? Your photos are really amazing! I use a Photosmart M547, and it's useful, but I'm not really a photographer, so I struggle with lighting, and trying not to get the images blurry, or cast to big of shadows...which ends up happening anyway. ^^;; So, what do you use, or what would you suggest I use, to get photos of your caliber?

I honestly think my photography is awful. I’m using a really old camera; a Canon Powershot to be exact. The camera has a very simple zoom and macro function that I take advantage of. There’s no way to tweak the macro but you can kind of tweak color contrast, vibrancy and ISO to some degree. If your camera has any of those features at all, I recommend that you play with them to see what gives you the best results. The macro option is what gives me the sharp details. It still takes me about 5-10 shots before I can get a “good” shot.

I also use a very simple light box set up which is just a gigantic plastic bin with three lamps (just 2 now because one of them decided to burn one of its wiring). The plastic bin is frost colored so I don’t have to use any fabric to diffuse the light. The three lamps are necessary to negate shadows so that every shot looks like it has a natural light.

Since my camera is old, I deliberately use “artsy” poses to take advantage of the macro feature. The camera won’t let me control it so I just cross my fingers that it’ll look good later.

Last, one of the important parts… I edit the photos. I use Photoshop or Gimp to correct the colors and get them as close as possible to what they look like in person. I don’t really do anything complicated except play with color and contrast. The colors usually look very dull in raw format.

So in short, you need to learn:

How to use your camera and take advantage of its features
Set up a lightbox
Use a photo editing software that you’re comfortable with to manipulate your photos

Each discipline is important and affects each step you take after it. It takes a bit of experiment but you’ll find what kind of setup is comfortable for you or gives you the best results. I really mean “comfy” because best results could also mean having to deal with the heat from 3-4 lamps! XD

I’d recommend taking a look at Retrograde Work’s photography tutorial. She’s much more knowledgeable when it comes to technical stuff in photography. She made a series of photography tutorials a while back but I’m having trouble locating them. You might wanna drop her a note.

You might also read this article on Photography Tips from Smashing Magazine. They were a huge help for me when I was starting out. =)

I had considered this but in some of my experiments, the vinyl paint would “weaken” and crumble when Mr. Super Clear Flat was applied.

Between Brillo (designed to recolor leather) and RustOleum (Car spray paint), RustOleum might be a better candidate since it really sticks to the plastic (via some chemical reaction, probably the acetone content).

I haven’t explored body recolors in a while so please do share your own experience or findings. =)

I can’t help but think that this might be a response to most folks moving towards mobile technology (Windows 8, I still hate you with a passion) and they are making these changes to better fit in with that paradigm assuming that people will just accept them eventually.

Remember when Facebook forced us to change the layout? Well, I still hate that too.

It’s not that I despise change, most changes are a move forward. What I can’t stand is that some changes seem unnatural or are inconsiderate of intuitive user-experience/ user-interface in exchange for something that kinda looks aesthetically pleasing.

That said about their interface, the changes to their subscription model is kind of a huge let down. These changes may be because of the limitation of the changes that they did but it’s unfair to take away some of the really cool things from a paid subscription… like keeping track of your statistics or an easy way to eyeball faves, comments and whatnot. Everything is a huge, loud image now. That must suck for areas where high-speed internet isn’t common yet.

If I were to ever commission a MH doll from you, would you be able to sketch out what your vision of the final product would look like? I know it's a weird (and possibly rude) question, but thanks for taking the time to answer!

Here’s a look at the second cosplay I ever made from the series Sailor Moon, debuted nearly a year ago, at Animazement 2012, I really enjoy wearing this despite its imperfections.

At the time when I made it I attempted using horsehair braid, but I found it difficult to use and understand so I pleated the skirt instead. I have since learned how to use horsehair braid and it is some really incredible stuff!

I made all of the patterns myself (including ones to recover the shoes in satin, they were suede before) exclusive of the leotard pattern which I modified from a Kiwk Sew one.

I wore this cosplay again at Anime Weekend Atlanta 2012 (where these photos were taken) and Roundcon 2012 as well.

This costume allowed me to prove to myself what I thought was impossible, I could make cosplays from my favorite series, Sailor Moon. :) Following this one I made Sailor Cosmos, Sailor Venus, and Sailor Pluto, photos of which I will post at some point. ;)

I don’t but they’re a lot easier than regular dolls. Just cut off the hair as usual and use either the Lock Loop type (if you have a tiny crochet hook available) or a variation of the Lock Loop.

The goal is to avoid any knots on the underside. You can’t use the reroot tool or knot method.
